Jim Burger, photographer, mixologist and mensch to many, walks a lot. He walks from his home in Remington all the way to Camden Yards and Orioles games. I walked with him to Lexington Market and, another day, to Broadway Market. I’ve said this before and written about it: When you walk, you see and appreciate so much more — in Baltimore, the architecture, how people live, what’s new, what’s decrepit and what needs to be done. When you take a bus, you walk more, unless the bus stop is right in front of your home. And, of course, walking is good for you. A lot of people have become health walkers.

My Sun column today (gift read at this link) is about walking. A lot of people got into this habit during the pandemic, and apparently they are still doing it, according to the CDC. I’m a little skeptical. I’ve seen a drop in walking since the pandemic. How about you? Comments welcome.

  1. I walk 3-4 miles nearly every day. I agree that you notice your surroundings in a different way when you walk. Details emerge. Small changes in familiar places pop out.

  2. Haha, that’s me, Uta Allers, second from right on a snowy day with a Sunday meetup hiking group at Loch Raven Reservoir. Obviously, that was before COVID and closure of the road on weekends, an issue (the fact that it is still closed) which you’ve put to the Mayor several times without success. We had to switch to other venues.

Thanks for your efforts, Dan, to make Loch Raven Res. safe for hikers, runners, bikers and families admiring the geese and ducks on weekends again.
