Peter Krug, the fifth generation of Krugs at the old ironworks on West Saratoga Street, took me through his shop one recent morning. After the tour, upstairs and down, I concluded that no place in Baltimore has a richer feel of yesterday, so real you can touch it and come away with dust on your fingers. G. Krug & Son is cluttered with objects — tools, patterns and samples of ornamental iron — from the last century and the century before that. If it seems that nothing has been discarded, there’s good reason: Krug now restores or replicates the ironworks that came out of the factory ages ago. G. Krug is said to be the oldest ironworks factory in the country, still operating in its 215th year. Please see the photos that follow, and you can read about it in my column for Baltimore Fishbowl.

Thanks, Dan! We lived in Krug’s neighborhood for several years and I was always wanted to see inside.

Can tours be taken of G. Krug & Sons? The Baltimore Heritage Organization would be interested. (410 332 9992).

They made and installed my outside handrails. Just perfect, exactly what I wanted.
