Some photographs from a recent summer fishing adventure on the Nation’s River, between Seneca Breaks and Riverbend Park — that is, between Montgomery County on the Maryland side, Fairfax County on the Virginia side.

Sunrise just downstream of Pennyfield Lock in Potomac, Maryland.
So much of the Potomac looks like this, wide and flat and lined with forest.
The Potomac River flows some 400 miles through forest from the Appalachian Mountains to the nation’s capital on the way to the Chesapeake Bay.
There are numerous islands along its course, huge and small, named and unnamed.
The day started cool and overcast, then turned bright and warm by midday. We saw great blue herons, mergansers, adult and juvenile bald eagles and, from the waters, my fishing companion caught and released a 21-inch smallmouth bass, a real beauty.
Wild flowers and thick brush along the steep bank of a Potomac island.

  1. Thank you for the beautiful photos. I am sad at the fact that the progress that has been made in cleaning upall bodies of water, is on a downward spiral now, and even greater one in the future. Amazing that so many don’t find it distressing as well, or just don’t care. 💔
