Readers of The Baltimore Sun might remember Mark “Farley” Grant from a series of columns I wrote about him. Starting when he was just 14, he spent nearly 30 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. After finally gaining his freedom in 2012, he found a job as a meat cutter and managed to get back on track. He was determined to do that — to make up for lost time, to try to live a peaceful and happy life — and he succeeded. It was frustrating at times, but Farley kept his eyes on the prize. He met and fell in love with a woman named Karen Chisholm and last night, surrounded by a large gathering of family and friends, they were married in Randallstown. His mother, Carmelita, had died while he was in prison; other supportive family members passed before him. But last night, aunts and uncles and cousins — so many cousins — were there to celebrate with him and Karen. The journey continues, and the story gets better as the new chapters in Farley’s life are written.
