I hear it all the time, and more so since the events of the last week, with the special counsel’s controversial report on President Biden’s handling of classified documents: Joe is old, the Democrats should have nominated someone else to serve the next four-year term as president. Robert Hur, the former U.S. Attorney in Baltimore, went well beyond his assignment and played the role of neuro-gerontologist, assessing Biden’s mental capacity and calling him a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” Other reports say Biden remains focused and, while 81 years old, maintains a work schedule many people of the same age gave up years ago.

Meanwhile, this weekend, we heard Trump say probably the most outrageous and dangerous thing any president, former president or candidate for president has said since the birth of the Republic — that he would encourage Russia to attack any nation of the NATO alliance if that nation had not maintained the level of defense spending recommended for members of the pact. Here’s a 77-year-old former president running for president again, daring a Russian dictator with access to nuclear weapons to attack a U.S. ally. His Republican apologists want us top blow it off as either Trump bluster or Trump’s crude way of making an important point when it is actually the kind of crazy talk heard in the right-wing echo chamber.

So I come out of Super Bowl weekend seeing a clear and super choice: Old Joe Biden, a decent man whose administration already has accomplished a great deal for the nation, versus Trump, an unhinged and dangerous accused criminal. In a nation with a majority of educated, informed, rational voters, this would not be a close call.

  1. Agree, Dan. Where are the anti-Soviet style Cold Warriors on the right? Plus nothing frosts my cookies like a lawyer (which I technically am) playing geropsychiatrist (which I know something about, having been a psych nurse on a unit serving WWII vets in their 70s and 80s). It was purely a political cheap shot. It’s poor professional form as an attorney, and plain disrespectful of old people (I’m one of those too).

  2. And again — how can ANYONE in their right mind vote for Trump. I did not watch Fox news after this statement was made but I wonder what they had to say about his comment.

  3. It should not be a close call, but this Fascist B——-d got 74 million votes last time and is now leading in the polls. Oh well, along with Brown Shirts, we might get an autobahn

  4. In a world where facts matter, Trump would never have a chance to become President. The problem we all must contend with is that in the crazy world of Republican politics, facts do not matter, paranoid conspiracy theories have replaced truth and logic, and confrontation replaces compromise.

  5. I think President Biden has done a great job! That report that came out, I think, was for political reasons. Yes, he is a older gentleman, but he has done wonderfully.
I would not vote for Trump if he were the last man on earth. He is evil and a disgrace to our great country,
    God Bless President Biden.

  6. I am only four years away from being President Biden’s age. I too have memory slips sometimes, but I would far and away rather have Joe with the team he has around him to keep him reminded than the evil djt who should have never been President in the first place. Most of us recognize a conman when we see and hear one. He even owes his scads of lawyers money he will never pay, but Putin is waiting to get him back in office..
