At a campaign rally over the weekend, Trump mocked President Biden for being a stutterer: “I’m gonna bring the country tuh-tuh-tuh-together,” he said, as if quoting a line from Biden’s State of the Union speech. It was a continuation of the ridicule Trump had started at a rally in January. “He’s a threat to duh-duh-duh-democracy,” he said in Iowa, mock-quoting Biden’s warnings about Trump.

We frequently hear that warning. Numerous pundits have said that Trump is a wannabe autocrat who will destroy American democracy, and they present that as the main reason to deny him a vote.

But, after watching and listening to his derision of Biden as a stutterer, I say there’s really only one reason for Trumpies to come to their senses and never again support him: He’s a cruel and indecent man.

There are many other adjectives we attach to Trump — obnoxious, juvenile, ignorant. There are many other things we can legitimately call him — sexual predator, racist, insurrectionist, cheat, con man.

But at the baseline, he’s just indecent and cruel.

So, a word to Trump supporters: If any of you had a son or brother who stuttered, and someone made fun of him for that reason, you’d want to punch that person’s lights out. You certainly would not want to have a relationship with that person, much less give him your vote.

People at the Trump rally laughed at his taunt of Biden, but I consider that just part of the MAGA cult/crowd mentality.

While many Trump supporters are probably beyond the reach of reason, most still possess a sense of decency. Most of them are not sociopaths. Most learned by high school that you don’t make fun of others for things they cannot control — a physical disability, for instance. Most of us consider the person who engages in that kind of mockery an ignorant bully. Most of us would not want to be associated with that person. We would think that person cruel and indecent. And we would never want to elect that person to any office anywhere, much less president of the United States.

  1. It’s passing strange how some many of our fellow Americans have accepted, nay, applauded punching down and the old “evil empire.” Something in the water? In the air? Corruption of DNA?

  2. Didn’t trump mock someone with a disability previously? He is indecent and cruel and this does not stop the 35% of the electorate who love him.

  3. Donald Trump is the most obnoxious person ever! How can anyone vote for him? He is just plain evil and I pray about that every day. God Bless Joe Biden.

  4. Dan,

If we could somehow get every person, who is now thinking they will vote for Trump in the National election this fall, to read this column, that would definitely cost Trump many, many votes. IF ONLY!!

  5. Right on point Dan. I’ve been having this recurring fantasy playing in my head, that in some bizarre circumstance, I am in close proximity to Donald Trump. Then, in an instant, with all of the pent-up anger and bewilderment I have towards this man, I resist the urge to punch him in his belly, instead, opting to knock the MAGA hat off of his head.

  6. Dan, you’ve got it right. Trump has clearly shown us over the past 9 years the person he is.
I will never understand why any decent, normal human being would see this sociopath as “my guy”. “Cruel and indecent” doesn’t begin to describe how abhorrent he is.
