On Monday, I listened to Nicole Wallace and guests on MSNBC try to make sense of Trump’s latest blurt about tariffs. It was the same mind-numbing discussion we’ve heard since “Liberation Day” in April. Nothing about Trump’s tariff business makes sense in the modern global economy, but the talking heads keep talking as if the subject was a normal one, delivered by a normal president trying to take some prudent action with regard to international trade.
It’s impossible to listen to more than two minutes of this. Trump is abnormal. No one can trust that what he says on Monday will be what he believes on Tuesday.
If MSNBC wants to keep viewers, it should offer a special, one-click service: The instant relief, in some MSNBC subchannel, found in quiet videos of beavers building a dam. The technical immediacy would be key: Viewers should be able to follow an on-air prompt to the subchannel, sparing them a search for stress relief. It’s better for mental health to watch beavers do the possible — build a dam — than to watch intelligent people do the impossible — make sense of Trump.

  1. There are stark differences between Trump and beavers. Beavers are good for the environment. Beavers are herbivores. And, male beavers mate for life with a single female beaver.

  2. When Mary Trump does her nightly news wrap up, she takes a minute at some point during the program to show something adorable, usually with animals, sometimes something celestial. It’s a good pause from the insanity.
