Dates have been set for performances of two plays by Baltimore Sun columnist Dan Rodricks — a second run of “Baltimore, You Have No Idea” in December 2023 and a new play, “Baltimore Docket,” for February 2024. Both plays will be staged in the theater of the Baltimore Museum of Art.

“Baltimore, You Have No Idea” played to three sellout audiences in December 2022 and was enthusiastically received. In the one-act play, Rodricks told tales from his newspaper days while a supporting cast portrayed some of the many people he’s encountered in writing one of the longest-running newspaper columns in the U.S.

“Dan’s play was one of the best 90 minutes of live theater I’ve experienced in recent years,” wrote Len Lazarick, founding editor and publisher of Maryland Reporter.

The second run of “Baltimore, You Have No Idea” will be Dec. 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 in the BMA’s Meyerhoff Auditorium. There will be six performances. The director is Will Schwarz and the music director is Mat Lane.

“Baltimore Docket,” a series of scenes from courtrooms and trials Rodricks observed over the years for his Sun column, will be staged February 9, 10, 16, 17, 2024. There will be six performances. Schwarz will be the stage director, Lane the music director. Casting for “Baltimore Docket” will take place in summer.

Tickets for each play will be $27 general admission, and on sale through our website in September. For more information:  www.youhavenoidea.org

  1. Hi Dan, Aren’t you supposed to love (Honor) your father and mother? It’s the 5th or maybe the 4th commandment. I still don’t understand Louis and John and their mother Georgia and father Peter. Glad they dropped the lawsuit. Tanya B Rodich

  2. Re “Baltimore You Have No Idea” a one act play by Sunpapers columnist Dan Rodricks in 3 sold out performances at the Baltimore Museum of Art , 12/2 and 3 2022:
Dan begins with his beginnings at the Evening Sun and proceeds through a series of stories to the present. The pacing is incisive, as Dan- the master of ceremonies moves through tales of humor and tragedy.
When Dan moved here from Rhode Island- he had to learn a new language “hon”.
The show, directed by Will Schwarz with thoughtful interjections on the piano by Matthew Lane ranging from Eubie Blake to the African American national anthem. The play opens with a sunset over row houses, and proceeds through stories Dan weaves from his many years as a columnist..

The tales- from a talented cast-bring to mind to those of us interested in print writing in our town, Thornton Wilder’s classic play of “Our Town”. We read Dan’s columns with great admiration for his “heart”- his ability to dig out the positive side of “Smalltimore”- from hon fests in Hampden to the malapropisms of “Pigtown”(as in “They’re building a new 20 story condom near the harbor”or “After the murder they evaporated us from our home”). With this one act play Dan moves beyond journalism to poetry.
Particularly poignant – a travelogue by a character “Mr Polyester” who takes us though amazing corruptions by ethically challenged mayors, forecasted by a quote from H L Mencken, once a Sunpapers editor: “Sooner or later we will elect a moron as President”. A large photo of Trump takles the screen.

Mayor Willie Don Schaefer makes a cameo appearance with his rubber ducky..

The piece presents Dan’s particular focus on criminals who have reformed, the blunders of other criminals, and as well and mothers who have lost their sons to gun violence.
Dan’s own childhood story adds even more depth.
The Sunpapers may have shrunk in size and new news venues arise such as the Banner and Fishbowl. It still has Dan Rodrick s (and others)!
Hopefully this piece will be a podcast- it is a classic.
But as the title suggests “You have no idea”.
